A cup of coffee

a cup of coffee

Coffee…what a word! What comes to your mind when you think of the word coffee? For most people, it’s just a word, but for some people, myself included, it’s more than a word.

Why do you drink coffee?” There are so many answers to that question. Some people drink coffee in the morning because they feel it helps them wake up while others drink coffee later in the day when they need a boost. Some people drink coffee and smoke a cigarette. And then, there are those people who drink coffee for no reason, perhaps out of habit or because they just like the taste of it.

Personally, I prefer to have a cup of coffee in the morning. For me, it’s the best time of an ordinary day. Even better, when I have a cup of hot coffee on Saturday mornings. When the sun comes out and everyone is still asleep, I like going to the kitchen and ceremoniously make my coffee. I love to serve my coffee with cookies or cake. I only have black coffee, so I need something when I finish it to sweeten my mouth.

Saturday mornings are magical moments because the house is quiet and I have all the time I need to relax and enjoy my loneliness. It is the time when I can “hear” the silence of our house. I am completely at peace with my surroundings. I usually sit in front of the window, with my feet up, looking out at the sea. I love the view from our house. The sea reflects the colours of the sky and every day we see a different painting of nature. I am fascinated by the reflection of the clouds in the sea. The landscape is magnificent. When the weather is cold or rainy, I usually light up the fireplace to warm up and calm down. On the other hand, when the weather is warm and sunny, I prefer to sit in the garden to enjoy the morning dew.

My mind is focused and I have no distractions. I have all the time I need to recall past events and do some self reflection. I filter through my decisions and all the important events that took place during the past week. I think of all the beautiful, funny, entertaining, recreational, laughable, playful and exciting moments I had with my family. I try to find a way to make those moments even better to use them in the future. Then I think of the interactions I have had with other people in my daily life or at my work. I definitely rethink all the bad moments of the past week and try to find a way to eliminate them. It is the time when I give myself the opportunity to do some self-criticism and find ways to improve. I believe that self development leads to better decisions and fewer conflicts.

My Saturday coffee time also includes setting my weekly schedule. It is very important for me to organise the upcoming week. The more organised my schedule is, the more things I will be able to accomplish. As a working mother, I have to deal with the needs of the family. Apart from the family routine that each of us follows, the No. 1 concern is meals. I feel like teenagers eat non-stop. It’s like they’ve come back from a war where they haven’t eaten for centuries! I hope I’m not the only one on the planet who has that thought. Therefore, at the end of my ” coffee journey “, I prepare the list of meals and of course the supermarket list.

Saturday morning is very special for me since I combine the joy of drinking a coffee with personal moments. Of course, there’s no way I can have just one cup of coffee in the morning. Probably I will serve myself a second one. No doubt, I’ll have another one in the afternoon to stimulate myself. I drink mostly espresso because it’s a small amount of coffee that is strong enough to give energy to my body and mind.

I recently read a study which claims that if you don’t exceed a certain amount of coffee daily, it can be beneficial to your health. Thank goodness these studies exist so they don’t make me feel like a coffee addict!
