10 Foods that are best not to store in the fridge

We are used to putting almost all food in the refrigerator, believing that it will remain fresh and usable even after weeks. Unfortunately, this is not true for all foods. Ten of them are listed below.

1. Melons

Freezing the melon has the effect of reducing its antioxidant substances. One study found that melons develop almost twice the nutrients of beta-carotene at room temperature. So keep the melons out of the fridge until you cut them.

2. Basil

When basil is stored at low temperatures, it quickly turns brown. Keep it in your kitchen in a shady place. Fill a glass with water and put the stalks inside.

3. Potatoes

Low temperature converts their starch into sugars and therefore affects their texture and taste. The best way to store potatoes is to put them in a paper bag, in a shady and dry place.

4. Coffee

When you refrigerate coffee, the moisture affects the beans, which means they lose their flavor and freshness. In addition, the temperature of the refrigerator changes every time you open it, which means that even more moisture develops between the grains. Store the coffee in an airtight jar in a shady place.

5. Onions

These vegetables need air to stay fresh. Store them in a paper bag and in a shady, well-ventilated area. Do not put them next to the potatoes, as the onions release gas and moisture and cause the potato to ripen quickly.

6. Garlic

Garlic cloves are best kept at room temperature (maybe a little cooler if possible), but definitely not in the refrigerator. Place the garlic in a slightly ventilated jar to retain some of the moisture.

7. Honey

Honey tends to freeze and crystallise at low temperatures. So keeping it at room temperature is the ideal way of storing honey.

8. Slices of bread

Storing the bread in the fridge keeps it fresh for more days but also dries it. Instead, store slices of bread in the freezer and bring them to room temperature before consuming them.

tomatoes

9. Tomatoes

Cold air changes their chemical pathways, slowing down those that contribute to flavor and speeding up others that ultimately make them less tasty. Store tomatoes on your kitchen counter if you want them to be delicious.

10. Nuts

For a stronger flavor, it’s best to keep nuts in airtight containers on the counter or in the cupboard. Besides, they don’t need the temperature of the refrigerator, because they don’t have enough moisture for bacteria to grow.
